Royal Australasian College of Surgeon’s Action Plan: Building Respect, Improving Patient Safety.
The Royal Australasian College of Surgeon’s are in the sixth year of long term campaign to build respect and improve patient safety in surgery. There are three areas of focus for this work:
- cultural change and leadership;
- improving surgical education; and
- strengthening complaints management.
They are implementing more than 20 projects outlined in their Action Plan and coordinating efforts through our campaign, Let's Operate With Respect.
The Action Plan responded directly to the work done in 2015 of an Expert Advisory Group (EAG), set up to investigate discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment in surgery. The work of the EAG was exhaustive and wide ranging. Their final report included detailed recommendations that has guided RACS’ efforts ever since.
The Action Plan sets out RACS long term program of work that aims to change the culture of surgery and support Fellows, Trainees and International Medical Graduates to operate with respect.
The Diversity Plan, that is part of the RACS Action Plan, sets out their commitments to support diversity in the profession. It outlines what they are doing so that, in time, the profession reflects the varied communities they are part of.
The Progress Reports outline the work they have done each year to implement the Action Plan and build a culture of respect in surgery.
